As an unique and first of it’s kind in Australia, the ‘calypso drums’project will endeavor to reach out to the youth of Queensland and encourage them to participate in the magic of world music, enabling them to foster multicultural and community values.
The focus of these workshops is to give the participants hands-on experience with new instruments and concepts. The main instrument to be used in these workshops will be the ‘steel-drum’, an enchanting instrument that originates from the islands of Trinidad & Tobago in the West Indies.
Essentially, the purpose of these workshops is to generate interest in music and an awareness of community through
· Raise self esteem
· Positive participation and peer relationships
· Improved cultural awareness
· Skill development
· Improved connection and respect for their educational institution and community.
The Australian Academy of Steel Drums is ultimately hoping to generate enough interest to create one
of the worlds few, and Australia’s only steeldrum orchestra.
Youth participating in these workshops will be encouraged to be creative,
and to tap into skills that may have existed but were never utilised.
